Unfortunately, our answer is very wishy-washy until we actually see the patient. Cost and length of treatment can vary significantly based on the complexity of problems. After we have a chance to look at the patient and take a few diagnostic records, we can almost always give an estimate of length of treatment and a fee. When we don’t, it is usually because we want to wait for further development before we feel any treatment would be appropriate. We will still point out what changes we will be watching for and try to give predictions for various scenarios. Does orthodontic treatment hurt? There will probably be periods during treatment when teeth are sore. Fortunately, these periods are relatively infrequent and usually only last a couple of days. A little ibuprofen or Tylenol will usually make things feel fine. We can usually predict when you will be a little uncomfortable and will try to give you a “heads up.” If there is ever significant “pain” please contact us. There may be something else going on which should not be ignored. What is early or interceptive treatment? This is treatment done while primary or baby teeth are still present. It is considered early treatment because there are usually issues that cannot be fully addressed until the permanent dentition is coming in. Early treatment is usually performed to address very specific problems that may make the patients case much more difficult if left alone until the permanent teeth are in. Some orthodontists like early treatment more than others. I feel we are fortunate to live in an area where the orthodontists are pretty conservative about early treatment.
